Training CollarsTraining collars can be a critical tool for the successful training of your dog, and as such, there are many kinds of training collars on the market, for all kinds of dog activities. Training collars were solely manual devices until the 1950's (for example, plain buckle training collars, Martingale training collars and limited choke training collars), when the first electronic training collars began to emerge. Electronic training collars have come a long way since these early devices of the 1950's. These "shock" training collars were designed to break dogs of unwanted behaviours such as chasing deer or livestock, and they were used to force dogs to come in when hunters wanted to go home and the dogs didn't. The training collars were so effective at delivering a powerful remote correction that trainers began exploring how the collars could be used to simplify other lessons. Unfortunately, the electronic training collars of that time were too strong to be used very effectively to reinforce trained responses, and it soon became clear that different electronic training collars were needed before they could be used in a positive manner to motivate desired responses. Today's modern electronic training collars allow trainers the ability to make it easier for dogs to learn by enabling the trainer to make perfectly timed corrections that are subtle yet motivating. The new, adjustable intensity training collars have also greatly increased the number of training situations in which these training collars can be used. |
