Hi Everyone, I own a beautiful grey tortie, whose name is Willow. Willow is a female, 3 years old and very spoilt. She has lots of toys to play with and she spends her time playing and sleeping, and stirring up my dog Patrick.

Willow has been vaccinated against the usual cat problems, but just recently I have noticed her sneezing. It is happening more and more and I am a bit worried about her. Her eyes are clear and not weeping, and her nose does not seem to be running.

Does anyone have any ideas? I will take her to the Vet if the problem persists, but I thought that I would ask the members first, to see if they have any suggestions as to what to do.

Thanks in advance,

Natty and Willow

Sounds like an allergy (but im no expert!)

Has anything changed in her environment recently?
There are cat flus too, I suppose, it is that time of year. But her nose isn't running.

My puss Xon has an allergy to some pollen types. Poor thing can sneeze and sneeze sometimes!

I have a 5 year old female and she was sneezing and I was worried she might be getting sick but it stopped after a day. Nothing else was wrong, no other symptoms etc. She doesn't go outside so I didn't see how she could have contracted anything. I didn't think of an allergy. Yeah she's had her immunisations like clockwork. Thankful the sneezing stopped.

Glad I popped in here to have a read of the posts. Makes me feel better that it might have been an allergy to something. I have 3 other cats so got to be careful with contagious like things. Not good in the summer heat when the fleas want to start, but Advantage usually controls the fleas well.

Natty, I hope Willow has stopped her sneezing.
and Tom, thanks for the suggestion of allergies.

Hi Everyone, Especially Tomo and Nightowl

Thank you all for your concern re Willow and her sneezing. I am happy to say that she has stopped sneezing and seems to be back to her old self, chasing moths and racing around the house.

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice.

I had a bad cold and cough and I think one by one my cats got it. First Sinbad stared sneezing and sneezing! I used a coldrub on hisnose, he sneed all the goo out and then he was fine. Then the next one started sneezing, got high fever which was treated by the vet, just kept her warm and gave her whiskas which she loves, then a bout of coughing! Then she was fine. Now its number three sneezing, one day of runny eyes, now he is fine too. Came to the conclusion that the cold ran through the family thats all!

I bought a Maine Coon in April and had nothing but trouble with him for several months. He sneezed, coughed, snored, etc. The first time I took him to the vet he had pneumonia, the second time about four weeks later he had fluid on his lungs again. Fortunately, he seems better now. I don't think the breeder was up front with me. I was promised registration papers after I sent the breeder proof of his netuering which was in July and as of yet after three e-mails to this breeder, I have yet to receive anything from her. It is now December. My family loves this cat and wouldn't give him up for anything but what a joke this has become.

Hiya Cats are Cool

It seems like you are having all the bad luck with your Maine Coon. I hope that he is all better now and not suffering any more. The Breeder sounds unscrupulous and evil, and I bet you wont hear anymore from them! They should have only sold you a healthy cat, and given you the Registration Papers at the same time.

Oh well, lets hope that your cat gets well very soon and gives you lots of love and enjoyment. I hope that he does not have weak lungs after suffering from pneumonia etc.

Bye for now, Natty and Willow

Take her to the vet asap to make sure its not the cat flu. I have a cat with cat flu. I purchased him when he already had the flu without knowing he had a disease. His eyes are fine but sneezes now & again. Apparently the vaccination is only about 70% effective & sometimes they get it before vaccination. If they have the cat flu they have outbreaks which can cause them to sneeze when stressed/other environmental changes. I'd check with the vet just incase.Apparently its very rare for cats to have allergies. More common with dogs. Hope Willow gets better soon

TIFFANY IT DOESNT REALLY MATTER HOW OLD THE POSTING IS. SOME PEOPLE MAY STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND WANT MORE ANSWERS.HOW ABOUT MORE PRAISE FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO HELP INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM DOWN FOR TRYING. NOW THATS RUDE.

I think Tiffany was just letting deguzman know he replied to an old thread. His post clearly indicated he didn't realise he was doing that, and it's not unusual for people to miss the original post date and ressurrect these old threads. It's no big deal, but letting someone know is no big deal either.

And by the way, try not to type in all capitals if you could. I know this will sound weird, but it's called "shouting" when done online. Capitals should be used for exclamation and emphasis. Just a friendly tip!

Cheers,

Karlos

I am experiencing the same problem with my 5 month old male rag doll.

He had been sneezing since the first day i got him from the cat breeder, and continued to sneeze for about 3 weeks until his left eye produced a type of conjunctivitis, only in the left eye. So i took him to the vet and they seem to think he had cat flu, even though he continues to remain well and healthy in every other way. His eye took about 2 weeks to heal and the sneezing subsided. Now about 3 weeks after the initial vet check, he has started sneezing more regularly and more louder etc. So i took him back to the vet and they think he has cat flu AGAIN. I know this is possible but aren't they supposed to have other symptoms then just sneezing? I am not sure if i am 100% confident in the vets in my area and would LOVE some help!

What are the signs of cat flu?

Sneezing and snuffling are common signs caused by inflammation in the nasal cavity and sinuses.

Conjunctivitis results in eye discharges.

Mouth ulcers and coughing may occur.

Viral infection is often accompanied by fever, so the cat is depressed, listless and reluctant to eat, especially if he can't smell his food due to buildup of discharge in the upper respiratory tract.

Some cats become dehydrated.

The severity and length of the clinical signs depends on the cat's immune system, so that young kittens, older debilitated cats, and un-vaccinated cats are most severely affected.

Young, un-vaccinated kittens can die from 'cat flu'.

Mimi did your vet do a swab to find out which pathogen it was that caused the cat flu? If not, then I would seriously be looking at another vet. Was there any antibiotics prescribed? Treatment and care sheets offered?

He had been sneezing since the first day i got him from the cat breeder

Never ever take a kitten or cat with these symptoms, get the breeder to treat before you take him or her home.
