With summer just around the corner, it's time to
pull out those dusty jogging shoes and get fit with Fido. Cold
weather can no longer be an excuse for missing early morning walks
and jogs! In fact, once you've overcome the first few outings
you'll be convinced you were mad you hadn't done it before!
Now, your plan is all about adventure and variety because when you
start a fitness regime with your best friend, you'll be wanting
inspiring scenery. Walking around the block can get tedious, so
put your thinking cap on for places that will excite.
Ring your local council and ask them for locations in easy driving
and walking distance and some further away for weekend jaunts. You
can choose from parks, beaches and forests, as well as walking to
different locations and shops for specific purposes on a regular
basis.
Worried about doggie droppings?
Don't be. So long as your dog is on a leash and you
pick up any droppings, then you're just as welcome as everyone else
(except in places where dogs are not permitted).
For those of you who can really see the fitness benefits of hanging
out with dogs, you may be keen to start a dog walking service.
Imagine how many dogs you can walk in just one day!
Be
prepared!
With big adventures just around the corner here are a
few tips to further enjoy your outings.
Firstly, ensure your pet is fit enough for your fitness schedule.
Check with your vet and ask the distances recommended for jogging
and walking the dog.
Meanwhile, find yourself a good pair of walking or running shoes.
Fido will be disappointed if you can't keep up.
Depending on where you'll be heading to on the day, there are
various products that will make the journey that much more
enjoyable. For instance, if you plan on doing regular day hikes,
consider investing in a pooch pack that will fit snugly on your dog
and provide areas for packing lightweight items.
Water discs are essential if you're heading off to the beach and
having a good quality lead and collar will ensure Fido is safe
throughout the day.
Make it interesting!
Change your destinations and routines regularly to
avoid the mundane although some places will be so picturesque you
will enjoy going back time and time again.
Wake up early on a Saturday morning and walk to a bakery some
distance away to buy your bread. Not only will this add variety, but
you'll be rewarded with a warm, fresh bun for all your efforts (and
maybe something for Fido too?).
Join an agility club or some other dog sport where you need to be as
fit as your dog. This will involve weekly meetings and training
schedules as well as practice time at home and at your local
leash-free park.
Diarise events such as the Million Paws Walk and do it each year
increasing the distance with each event. Think of all the people
you'll meet and the good cause you will be supporting!
Head to the beach and teach your dog how to swim. Find out where the
leash-free beaches are and head out for a fun-filled day in the
sand. Don’t forget the sunblock for both you and Fido! |
