Description...

Giant Schnauzer Dog BreedVery energetic, keen, bold and responsible breed that likes to run. Many times they are too spirited for young children. Giant Schnauzer's respond well to obedience training. Personalities can range from tranquil to rather skittish.

Physically, they are a very large breed, with short, wiry coats.

History...

Originally this breed was used as a cattle driver from the Bavarian region of Germany. It's the oldest of the three Schnauzer breeds, and is the result of a cross between the black Great Dane and perhaps the Bouvier des Flandres. Today these dogs are often used as a police dog, home guardian and companion.

Traits...

They love to be outside, but do not play aggressive games with a Giant Schnauzer. They tend to "not lose" in situations where they are hit or aggressively touched.

Good aspects...

Giant Schnauzer Head - Dog BreedThis breed may be large, but has minimal shedding. It can adapt to any lifestyle, but prefers the outdoors. Giant Schnauzers learns quickly, and sometimes use this intelligence to try to outwit its owner.

Health...

Susceptible to hip dysplasia.

Be aware...

This is a very voracious breed. Because of their size, they need a lot of food to keep going. They also need a lot of exercise. This breed can be strongly territorial.

In spite of their short hair, this breed needs regular grooming.

Summary...

They have harsh coats, and need grooming twice a week. They can be black or salt and pepper coated.
