Description... |
English
Cocker Spaniels coat is a feathered silky texture with the hair on
the tail, stomach, chest and legs longer. Regular grooming will
decrease problems with shedding and a messy appearance. Their ears
hang down. Coat colouring includes: solid colours, a speckled blue
and white roan, black with tan points, parti-coloured (black and
white, tan and white) and tri-coloured (black, tan and white.)
English Cocker Spaniels run slightly larger than American Cocker
Spaniels.

History...
English Cocker Spaniels are originally from England
where they were developed for hunting. The dog will flush a bird
and then retrieve it. They still retain a certain amount of that
hunting instinct and ability. The breed has split into two types,
field and show, although a puppy from either strain will make a
good pet.

Traits...
English Cocker Spaniels are primarily a household
pet and will consider themselves a member of the family. This
breed has also recently gotten into the sport of tracking.
Good aspects...
English
Cocker Spaniels are gentle and playful. They make a good pet to
have around children and are good for the first time or
inexperienced dog owner. They are easily trainable and actually
enjoy the attention (Note: this breed is very sensitive, so
training should be persuasive, not sharp.) They are very sociable
with family members, children and strangers.
Health...
Health problems may include PRA, abnormalities in
their eyelids and/or eyelashes and ear infections.
Be aware...
This breed may have behaviour problems that include
stealing food and soiling in the house. They are also prone to
submissive and/or excitable urination, resulting from being
excessively submissive.
