Description... |

The Somali looks like a
longhaired variety of the Abyssinian, and is a striking cat,
resembling a little fox. Somalis have a slender, muscular body, a
wedge-shaped head, and large green or copper, almond-shaped eyes.
The double-layered coat is soft and fine, with a ruff around the
neck, and longer fur on the the legs called the breeches. Ruddy
(reddish-brown) is the most common and desirable colour. Other colours
accepted in the breed include red, blue and fawn.

This breed is closely related in
its development to the Abyssinian, a breed which originated in
present day Ethiopia, which borders Somalia.

Somalis are extroverted,
vocal and energetic. They love to play in water, and are very
people-oriented.

|
Kittens are born with a
short coat, and acquire full body size and their longer, sleek coat
by about 18 months of age. The overall
impression of the Somali is that of a well proportioned medium to
large cat, firm muscular development, lithe, showing an alert,
lively interest in all surroundings, with an even disposition and
easy to handle. The cat is to give the appearance of activity, sound
health, and general vigour.
