Description... |
|
This is a small, pixie-like
cat. Females may weigh as little as 6-8 pounds, and males 8-9
pounds. The body is stockier than that of the Cornish Rex. The head
is wedge shaped. A clear stop should be visible between the large
eyes. The ears are very large and set low on the head. The coat is
less wavy than that of the Cornish Rex. It is soft and fine.
Accepted colours include white, cream and blue; patterned coats also
are accepted.

History...
|
|
The Devon Rex arose as a
spontaneous mutation in Buckfastleigh, Devon, England, in 1960. Miss
Beryl Cox was responsible for procreation of this breed from its
progenitor, "Kirlee". The Devon Rex is a separate mutation from the
Cornish Rex.

|
Traits...
|
|
The Devon Rex is sometimes
called the "poodle cat", due to its coat, and the fact that it wags
its tail when content. These are very friendly, outgoing cats.
|
|
Health...
|
|
The large ears require
frequent cleaning but no specific ear diseases are described in the
breed.

Summary...
|
|
The
Devon Rex is a breed of unique appearance. Its large eyes, short
muzzle, prominent cheekbones, and huge, low-set ears create a
characteristic elfin look. A cat of medium fine frame, the Devon is
well covered with soft, wavy fur; the fur is of a distinctive
texture, as the mutation which causes its wavy coat is cultivated in
no other breed. The Devon is alert and active and shows a lively
interest in its surroundings.
